We’ve seen in the past that Helicarriers tend to be named out of mythology and literature—the Helicarrier Iliad is the main one at the moment, and we’ve seen the Odyssey as well. Given that, I don’t think a warship named Gungnir is all that far-fetched. Especially when you consider that SHIELD is an international organization, so it’s not going to likely name it’s craft after the military heroes or history of any one particular nation.

The fun part: Back in the old Iron Man: Hypervelocity miniseries I did with artist Brian Denham, we showed SHIELD fielding Stark-designed experimental missiles also named Gungnir! So, in theory, the big Gungnir could fire a whole lotta little Gungnirs at suprahuman targets! Wheeee!
